An active vehicle suspension is provided. A user device, e.g. a smartphone, tablet, laptop computer or a personal digital assistant is identified at 205 as being operated by a vehicle occupant. The active vehicle suspension then gathers data regarding the condition of the road over which the vehicle is travelling at 210. An operation being performed by the user device is then identified at 215, 220. A road condition is then determined, and the vehicle suspension is adjusted based at least in part on the identified user device operation and the road condition. If deemed necessary, the attention of an occupant of the vehicle is alerted to the change of operating mode of the vehicle suspension 230, 235.
