A hoisting system (20) for hoisting a load relative to a body (28) includes a hoisting cable (26), a hoisting mechanism (24) selectively operable to deploy and retract the hoisting cable, and a guide mechanism (40) movably mounted to the body at a position between the body and the hoisting cable. The guide mechanism includes at least one locking device (60) that selectively locks the guide mechanism against movement in a first direction. The guide mechanism comprises a roller (42) coupled to a ratchet gear or spline (62) locked against rotation in one direction by a pawl (64).
