A method of charging a battery pack via an off-board energy source uses an interleaved boost converter and closed loop control. The energy source outputs a charging current via the DC charging port during a direct current fast charge (DCFC) process. The controller detects a voltage inconsistency condition in which the voltage capacity of the battery pack exceeds the voltage capacity of the energy source. In response to the condition, an increase in the charging current over time is recorded as a current trajectory, and an open-loop equivalent time constant is extracted from the current trajectory. The time constant of the PI control block is set to be substantially equal to the equivalent time constant. The PIM uses proportional-integral control to control in a closed loop. The charging current is controlled in a continuous current conduction mode during the DCFC process.
