A computer-implemented method for vehicle wheel position positioning includes accumulating information in a data storage device regarding a temperature characteristic corresponding to each of a respective plurality of wheel positions of each of one or more types of vehicles. The information about the temperature characteristic may be information about a temperature rise characteristic associated with a given load. The contained air temperature data is collected from sensors respectively associated with tires mounted on the vehicle. The sensor may be, for example, a TPMS sensor. A local computing unit or a remote server identifies a wheel position associated with the tire based on a comparison of the contained air temperatures collected over a period of time relative to stored information about temperature characteristics. The wheel position information may be implemented to estimate and/or predict a tire wear condition for a corresponding tire, and optionally further predict a tire traction condition based on the collected vehicle tire data.
