The invention belongs to the related field of power distribution and power supply equipment, and discloses a flywheel energy storage system suitable for rail transit, which comprises a direct current switch cabinet, a bidirectional converter and a flywheel energy storage device, and is characterized in that an upper opening of the direct current switch cabinet is in bidirectional connection with a rail transit contact network, and a lower opening of the direct current switch cabinet is in bidirectional connection with an input end of the bidirectional converter; the output end of the bidirectional converter is in bidirectional connection with the flywheel energy storage device, and the bidirectional converter is used for realizing corresponding charging and discharging control based on a real-time voltage detection value of the rail transit overhead line system; the flywheel energy storage device executes corresponding charging and discharging according to different starting states of the bidirectional converter. The invention further discloses a corresponding method. According to the invention, the impact of overvoltage on a power grid can be more effectively absorbed when the locomotive is braked, energy is fed back to the power grid when the locomotive is started, and the problem of overlarge device voltage stress caused by large stray inductance in a long commutation loop in the prior art is effectively solved at the same time.
