A belt (30) for an elevator system (10) includes a plurality of tension members (42) arranged along a belt width (40) and a jacket material (44) at least partially encapsulating the plurality of tension members, the jacket material (44) defining a traction surface (32), a rear surface (34) opposite the traction surface defining a belt thickness (36) with the traction surface, and two end surfaces (38) extending between the traction surface (32) and the rear surface (34) defining a belt width (40). A metallic coating (50) is applied via deposition of solid particles on at least one of the two end surfaces (38).
