A vehicle detection device (4) is provided with: a camera (8) that captures an image of a front region, the camera (8) having an image sensor (14) that has a plurality of imaging elements including a first imaging element group and a second imaging element group, and a first filter that filters the image of the front region; a first filter for reducing the amount of light incident to the first imaging element group than the amount of light incident to the second imaging element group; an image generation unit (10) that generates a first image on the basis of information obtained from the first imaging element group and generates a second image on the basis of information obtained from the second imaging element group; and a detection unit (12) that detects a preceding vehicle on the basis of the first image and the second image.
