A driver fatigue warning system is disclosed that includes a speed limit detection device, a speed sensor, a warning device, and a controller. A speed limit detection device detects a speed limit on a road on which a host vehicle travels. A speed sensor detects a speed of the host vehicle. A warning device may be used to warn an operator of a host vehicle of driver fatigue. The controller is in communication with the speed limit detection device, the speed sensor, and the warning device. The controller determines a change in the speed limit of the road based on the speed limit detection device. When the speed change is greater than a change threshold, the controller determines that the speed change has occurred based on the speed sensor. The controller does not increase a count of speed change occurrences when the speed change is related to a change in the speed limit, and activates the warning device when the count of speed change occurrences exceeds a change threshold indicative of driver fatigue.
