The invention relates to an automatic staff gauge detection system based on machine vision. The automatic staff gauge detection system comprises a binarization processing unit, a thresholding processing unit, a mean value processing unit, a target image extraction unit and a scale identification unit, wherein the binarization processing unit extracts staff gauge images from staff gauge video images and carries out binarization processing on the staff gauge images, the thresholding processing unit carries out thresholding processing on the staff gauge images, the mean value processing unit obtains the mean value of all draft data, the target image extraction unit obtains staff gauge number images above the water surface boundary and containing staff gauge numbers, and the scale identification unit calculates the matching assessment value of template sample images. The template sample image corresponding to the maximal image matching assessment value is identified as the waterline scale. The automatic staff gauge detection system measures draft value accurately, conveniently, fast and effectively, and prevents manual observation error.
