AbstractThe detonation of cylindrical powder RDX and PETN charges with a co-axial lithium-filled cavity has been investigated. The velocity of the detonation wave and the front profiles of the detonation waves, as well as the shock wave in lithium, were determined by high-speed streak-camera photography. The shock wave in lithium has been proved to exceed the detonation front, hence the detonation front takes a conical form. Having passed a distance of 4–5 diameters of the cavity, the process develops in the stationary mode and it propagates further with a constant velocity exceeding the ordinary velocity of detonation for a given explosive.
