Fretting examined in its engineering aspects and on more theoretical basis; fatigue initiation by fretting, and methods proposed for prevention; attention focused mainly on bolted joints in aircraft; it is suggested that more research is required into basic process of fatigue disruption at structural joints; fracture evidence on which treatment is based related to structures designed in accordance with aircraft practice and made in material basically aluminum alloy, apart from certain steel bolts and fittings.
