Knowledge of basic optics is necessary to understand lasers and holography; diffraction, coherence, and interference are discussed; coherence is shown to be necessary before interference can occur; coherence is difficult to obtain with conventional light sources but is readily available from lasers; since wavelength of light is so small, it lends itself well to measurement of things which are being made to high precision, or to measurements of small distortions or small movements; interferometric techniques and types of interferometers are described and their possible applications in automobile manufacture indicated.
