In order to obtain sinkage of ship at low speeds, author takes for immersed portion of ship, semi-ellipsoid, xy-plane being water surface; further, sinkage is assumed to be due to streamline fluid motion around submerged part of model, neglecting disturbance of water surface; exact expression may be found for total defect of vertical pressure and hence for certain equivalent sinkage.
