Comparison is made between performance of three-shaft cycle and that of two-shaft cycle with variable geometry power turbine; operating in heavy commercial vehicle, engine parameters considered are specific output power, fuel consumption, engine response, torque characteristics, and engine braking capability; three-shaft cycle showed average improvement of 5% in specific fuel consumption, stall torque ratio 3.8 vs 2.65 for two-shaft cycle, potential increase in engine braking capability, and engine response consistent with two-shaft cycle.
