The development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is a key enabling technology to prevent traffic accidents, enable road charging, and reduce congestion. However, the deployment ITS is limited by positioning and wireless communication technologies. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can provide positioning and timing services globally but requires good visibility of navigation satellites that is difficult in urban area where ITS systems were deployed. Currently, only the Global Positioning System (GPS) operates at an accuracy of about 10 m. Advanced GNSS provides more navigation satellites and signals improving the visibility and positioning accuracy to sub-metre even centimetre level in real-time. Additional integrity information will be described for safety-critical applications. Potential improvements of current and new ITS applications enabled by the modernization of GNSS are presented in this paper. In addition, Precise Point Positioning (PPP) using only one GNSS receiver and wireless communication network is much more cost-effective as it removes the need of reference receivers and relative positioning used in current applications. The advantages of using PPP technology in ITS will be demonstrated in this paper.
