"Benchmarking" was designed as a tool to provide an important reference for political decision makers, infrastructure planners, and transport operators, which is to monitor and evaluate the quality, efficiency and sustainability of urban transport, to specifically improve sustainable transport systems at local, regional, and national levels. In this paper, the main benchmarks of urban transport system in China were presented by selecting the various performance indicators and comparing with different nations and international cities. Later on the studies revealed the need for 8 main benchmarks dealing with 8 aspects: economy, urbanization, motorization, modal split, travel behaviour, affordability, energy consumption and traffic safety.
